Shenzhen is a metaphor for the new China. Only 20 years ago Shenzhen was a mere fishing village of 300 denizens. After Mao Zedong's death, a new reformist leader, Deng Xiao Ping, came to this fishing village with a grand vision for it's future. He wanted an answer to Hong Kong's capitalistic success, or as he called it, "A window to the world".

The dream has seemingly become a reality. Shenzhen today has an estimated population of 7 million people. It boasts the highest per capita income and is one of China's most modern cities as well as one of it's biggest trading locations.

Present achievements include it's newly finished subway system, it's new highway connections to Hong Kong, and all the new intenational amenities one looks for. It's not all roses though. Almost half the population are migrant workers looking for a better life and thievery can be a common nuisance.

For it's future, the government has proclaimed they would like to see a population increase to 40,000,000 residents by the year 2020. Shenzhen in this sense has a huge potential for the future and some huge difficulties to face.

It is an exciting and evermore convenient time to visit China, and Shenzhen, though not historically important now, will certainly be reflected upon as China’s modern day turning point.

As China progresses at lightning speed, a visit now will insert you into the history of new China, as 5 years later it will be completely different again. So come now, and be a part of history.

Unlike other Chinese cities that give up and shut down early, Shenzhenians like to stay up all night.

This is the Chinese city that truly never sleeps. Many businesses operating in Shenzhen are 24 hours.

After a good night at the bar, it's easy to get some eats at 3, 4 or 5am anywhere in the city.

Check out our listings for bars and restaurants in Shenzhen.
